The emergence of multicellularity transformed life on earth by setting the groundwork for the evolution of complex life forms. We use Snowflake yeast to study this transition by replicating the early stages of the evolution of multicellularity in the lab. Here, we show that increased cluster size is achieved by changing how individual cells pack within the cluster.
